Thousands lined the streets of Brantford Friday to say goodbye to a hometown hero.

Family, friends and even total strangers gathered honour Trooper Larry Rudd, Canada’s 146th soldier lost to the war in Afghanistan.

Rudd, 26, was killed by a roadside bomb May 24 while delivering supplies to fellow troops southwest of Kandahar City.

“All of us are very proud of him,” said Rudd’s neighbour Paul Duesling. “We were proud of him when he went.”

“We came out today to show support for Canada’s military and a brave young man who made a noble choice to serve his country,” said Brantford resident Jim Sherell.

The flag on Rudd’s casket was removed and presented to his family. The funeral was followed by a private cremation service.

Always remember: Freedom is not free.

"...You are this country's bravest sons. And you make us proud Canadians...Now it's our turn to stand on guard for thee. "

My heart and prayers go out to all who love Trooper Rudd. Rest in peace, sir.
