Marine Honored at 44th Academy of Country Music Awards

USMC Lieutenant Andrew Kinard, who was wounded in Iraq, introduces a performance by Trace Adkins at the 44th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas April 5, 2009.

Spartanburg veteran on country music awards show

Spartanburg native Andrew Kinard, who lost both legs in Iraq in the fall of 2006, was invited by the Wounded Warrior Project to have a part in Sunday night’s Academy of Country Music Awards.

Kinard introduced Trace Adkins, who sang, “Til the Last Shot’s Fired” with the West Point Glee Club. He remained on stage for the performance.

When Kinard first took the stage, he received “a rousing standing ovation,” said his father, Harry, a Spartanburg urologist, who watched the broadcast from home.

“They were very kind to him, to stand up and applaud. It was real touching,” Harry Kinard said. “… It made me think about how far he has come, from the standpoint of just a short period of time ago being so severely wounded, and now being here on stage at the music awards.
